EMPLOYMENT
WHAT TO BRING TO THE NORTH SHORE
This list has been developed and revised over the years by your fellow-interns. You are welcome to add to the list or suggest changes for those who will follow in your footsteps.
This is a wilderness-outdoor area. Dress is VERY CASUAL. You should bring a few "going out" clothes for nights out in Canada, Duluth or Minneapolis. There are no dressy or "smart" bars, pubs or clubs in or around Grand Marais. Since temperatures are cool in the summer, and cold in the winter, dressing in "layers" works best.
The main items to bring are:
- Jeans
- T-shirts
- Sweatshirts, sweaters
- Shorts
- Swim suit
- Dark trousers (navy or black), and white
- blouse or shirt for Front Desk work
- Shoes to work in: Comfortable, dark, flat
- Trainers and/or walking shoes
- Camera(or wait to buy one in the U.S.)
Into Sports?
Bring any equipment that is easy to travel with i.e. tennis racket. Several students have purchased ski or snowboarding equipment once they get here.
Into Music?
Bring CD's or tapes of your favorites. Shops in Grand Marais are aimed more at the tourist. Though there is an excellent, and student-favorite store in Duluth, but it is not always easy to make the trip.
Advice we hear from "Graduates" every year:
DON'T BRING TOO MUCH! A favorite event when not working is SHOPPING! Though geared for the tourist, there are quaint , unusual or specialty shops in Grand Marais; a regional shopping mall in Duluth; access to great direct mail catalogs... and of course the biggest shopping mall in the world , the Mall of America... in Minneapolis. Though not right next door, this huge mall makes a fun, special trip to get the "shop-until-you-drop need" out of your system. Most of the interns buy loads of things during their stay. Clothes, cameras and electronic equipment are generally cheaper.
Winter Wear
For fun and comfort in the snow, you might wait until you get here for a wider selection of hats, gloves, turtlenecks, windbreakers, boots, coats and jackets. Many direct mail catalogs like Eddie Bauer, Land's End and L.L. Bean are popular for outdoor gear and also make shopping easy.
Have a safe trip and we'll see you soon!
